INTERMEDIATE CANOE SKILLS WEEKEND

2 days

This course is ideal for those who have some open canoeing experience and looking to develop their skills in more intermediate environments.  Whether you are looking to head out to more exposed lochs in stronger winds, and tackle faster flowing Grade 2 white water rivers.  This course will give you everything you need to head out with confidence, whether solo or tandem.  On the river, we shall take you to the finest venues to allow you to begin exploring and embedding the fundamental white water skills of breaking in/out, ferry gliding with stroke refinement and sophistication.  Understanding the river environment is the first step to this, and we shall spend time getting to know basic river hydrology.

On open water, we shall look at the technical and tactical applications required to drive the boat in stronger winds, and the safety techniques required to be self-sufficient far from shore.  Those all important traditional skills of rafting, sailing, lining and tracking can also be covered, as well as safety and rescue techniques.

British Canoeing personal performance awards can be included in this course if desired.

ADVANCED CANOE SKILLS WEEKEND

2 days

This course is ideal for those who are confident Grade 2 open canoeists and have experience of paddling on lochs/lakes in Force 3 winds.

This course will make use of either open water or river environments (or both), dependent on weather and conditions, and group aspirations.

On the river, paddling the open canoe on Grade 3 is exhilarating, requires precise execution of tactics, and is hugely rewarding.  It can also be a stressful, and potentially expensive business!  This course will look at dialling cast-iron tactical frameworks on Grade 2 in order to approach Grade 3 with solid foundations.  At some of the finest Scottish Grade 3 venues, we shall then explore and embed new technical and tactical layers, precision timing, as well as the psychological skills of controlling anxiety.  Traditional skills of poling, lining and tracking also need to be planned and executed with skill, and we shall give you the tools to develop this successfully.  More advanced White Water Safety and Rescue techniques are also required, and we shall spend time giving you simple, cast iron solutions. The decision of when to paddle, portage, line, pole and track is a critical one, and must be backed up with skills to boot - we shall give you these in abundance.   Our tried and tested methods and quality coaching will have you ready and raring to tackle Grade 3 with confidence.

On open water, paddling in Force 5 winds or stronger, also requires sophisticated tactical application and technical skills which maintain energy and a more consistent performance. Sailing, rafting and tracking also require sound theoretical templates, and more skilful performances.  We shall explore and embed these skills with quality individualised coaching to leave you confident and exhilarated by strong wind journeys.

British Canoeing personal performance awards can be included in this course if desired.
