4 days, 3 nights camping expedition

18-22 July 2022

The Sound of Arisaig on the West Coast of Scotland is arguably one of the finest coastlines in the world; and the perfect place for self-supported journeying by sea kayak.  With white sand beaches, abundant wildlife, breathtaking sunsets, varied history, towering hillsides and stunning views out to Skye and the Small isles - it is nothing short of a sea kayaker's paradise.

This 4 day / 3 night expedition will be self-supported, camping from our kayak at some excellent wild camping spots.  The exact route will be weather dependent, but we will aim to explore the very best sections of coast between Mallaig and Ardnamurchan.  The days will cover distances of around 15-20km per day at most, to leave plenty of time for stopping and exploring as we paddle each day. Being in the place is just as important as travelling through it!

There will also be learning on offer.  Built in to the trip will be plenty of coaching on the move, and hints and tips, to help develop your own personal sea kayak skills.  We'll also help develop your expedition skills, including camp craft, navigation and tidal planning.

You will require all of your own paddling and camping equipment for this expedition, as well as all your own food and drink.  Our expert guides will guide you through this stunning coastline, share with you facts about the history, landscape and wildlife of the area, as well as develop your skills so you can be more self-sufficient in the future and enjoy your own adventures.

Who the trip is for:

This trip is designed for the "Improver Sea Kayaker."  You will have all of your own equipment, and have undertaken some day trips by sea kayak already.  You will have experienced a bit of wind and swell at times, but not too much, and looking to develop your confidence and skills in these conditions. You will be comfortable camping and cooking outdoors, but perhaps might not have done this from your sea kayak before.  You will be comfortable paddling around 15-20km in a day at most, and able to move around on rocky coastlines.  A roll is not necessarily required, but you should be clear on how to be rescued efficiently by someone else.

Your aspirations will be to develop your sea kayak skills in some wind and swell, as well as your expedition skills, so you can plan and undertake your own sea kayak expeditions in the future.

Contact us if you are not sure whether or not this trip is right for you.

7 days, 6 night camping expedition

3rd-9th July 2022

At the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides, lies one of the finest sea kayaking destinations in the world.  The Isle of Barra, the neighbouring nine Bishop's Isles, Pabbay, Mingulay and Barra Head, offer truly exceptional paddling - wild, challenging, remote, awe inspiring scenery, towering cliffs, lighthouses, white sand beaches and countless sea birds.  Our ultimate destination, route and itinerary depend on the weather, the wind, the Atlantic swells, together with the needs and wants of the group.  With countless islands to choose from and explore, as well as the coastline of Barra itself, this is one of the finest sea kayaking adventures to be had in Scotland.

Working together with Will Copestake from Kayak Summer Islesthis is a 6 night camping expedition taking all our food and equipment with us in the boats with the aim of being self-sufficient for the duration of the expedition.  This gives us the opportunity to truly explore these stunning islands unrestricted, being closer to nature sleeping under canvas and have the social enjoyment of cooking, and perhaps sharing a "wee dram" together in the evenings, sharing stories of the day's paddle.

We will foster a team ethos from the outset, and all trip planning and tidal calculations will of course always be shared and chatted through as a group throughout the expedition, and coaching and instruction in tidal planning will be available.

Who the trip is for:

This is a committing trip to a remote part of the UK out into the Atlantic, so you will be a confident "Intermediate+" sea kayaker who has done lots of paddling in stronger winds (force 4+) and swell (a metre or more), with a pretty reliable roll and self rescue. You will be comfortable paddling up to 30km distances in a day. You will also be well practiced at wild camping and outdoor cooking your own food.  Contact us if you are unsure as to whether or not this trip is appripriate for you.

10 days of guided day trips

25th July-3rd August 2022

For the sea kayaker, Shetland is quite simply one of the finest destinations in the world for awe inspiring scenery, towering cliffs and countless stunning caves.  A stunning array of wildlife and seabirds, islands rich in history and tradition, and some of the finest sea kayak trips that you could ever dream of all await you.

This guided trip aims to take in as many of the classic trips as the weather and the swell allows us to - Muckle Roe, Papa Stour, Muckle Flugga, Mussa and Sumburgh Head are just some of the locations on the hit list.  As always, it will depend on the conditions, but beyond these trips there is so much more on offer, as every inch of the coastline is quite simply fantastic and warrants exploration, if shelter needs to be sought.

This trip will comprise of 10 days of guided day trips, staying at campsites, with tent/touring pitches and facilities, each evening.  We shall begin our trip meeting in Lerwick on Day 1 before travelling to Unst to base ourselves at a campsite there for the first few days.  This will firstly allow us to explore the fantastic northern isles of Unst and Yell.  After a few days we will then move to a campsite a Braewick on Eshaness which will allow us to explore the superb gems of the western side of Shetland.  There may also be a possibility for a self-sufficient wild camp on Papa Stour (so camping kit will be required), which we hope to build into the trip, but this will depend on the weather and conditions.  A rest day will also be built into the schedule to allow time to explore the local area.

The trip will be led by Matt Haydock and Roddy McDowell, both expert coaches/guides who have paddled on Shetland numerous times and know the area well.

We look forward to sharing this incredible sea kayak destination with you.

Who the trip is for:

The trip is appropriate for the "Intermediate" sea kayaker.

You will be confident in winds to Force 4 and 1m swells, and happy to paddle in conditions bigger than this when supported by others.  Whilst a roll is not essential, you will be confident and efficient at being rescued by someone else in these conditions.  You will be comfortable paddling up to 30km in a day, and ok moving around rocky coastlines on foot.

Please contact us if you are unsure whether or not this trip is for you.
